How To Brand A Folding Military Camp Stool

Here's the invitee tutorial I mentioned yesterday: a DIY folding stool made from scratch! This projection uses to a greater extent than of my novel Arrow fabric too makes a non bad side table, footrest, or portable seat. Here's LiEr to nation y'all how to brand them.

- - - - - -
Hello! I am LiEr too I write a arts and crafts weblog ikatbag that is business office fabric, business office cardboard and, occasionally, wood. Today, I am happy to live on hither sharing how to brand these niggling wooden fold-up stools.

I made these stools inwards Jessica's novel Arrow stuff for my 3 girls, inwards 2 sizes. The smaller i is for my 6-year-old too the 2 larger ones are for my almost-8 too almost-10-year old.

They also brand adept footrests for the director's chair inwards yesterday's post.

Though they are meant for kids, they tin forcefulness out easily live on sized upwardly for adults, too. The dimensions inwards this tutorial are for the larger stool;

to brand the smaller one,

follow the dimensions inwards the diagram below. The hardware for both stools are the same.

We'll live on making the stools inwards 2 parts - the wooden frame too the stuff seat.

Part I: The Wooden Frame

I used lumber inwards 2 sizes - 2X2 for the side beams too 1x2 for the legs too cross bars. The thicker woods is sturdier, but the thinner legs folded to a greater extent than compactly for the kid-sized chairs. If I were making this inwards a larger size for an adult, I'd role 2X2 lumber for the entire frame.

This is the hardware I used:

(Note: y'all tin forcefulness out simply equally good role skinny screws inwards house of the nails, but I didn't convey those on hand.)

along amongst the associated tools:
  • Saw (hand or electric)
  • Drill, amongst the relevant drill bits
  • Hammer
  • Sandpaper
  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench/spanner for the hex bolts
  • Heavy-duty staple gun
  • Wood glue
  • Ruler, T-square, pencil

Step 1: Cut
Cut too sand lumber inwards the next lengths -

Of the 2x2:
  • Two 14" lengths for side beams

Of the 1x2:
  • Four 19" lengths for legs
  • One xi 3/8" length for cross bar
  • One ix 3/4" length for cross bar
Cut away i halt of each of the iv legs at a 45 floor angle.

Step 2: Drill
Drill holes inwards the legs equally shown -
first, holes for the bolts, 9" from the apartment ends.

Next, pre-drill holes for the screws, centrally (or equally best y'all can) through the apartment ends.

Also, pre-drill matching holes for the screws inwards the 14" side beams, equally shown:

Step 3: Assemble the wider legs
Gather 2 legs, the xi 3/8" cross bar too the 14" side beam amongst the 12" screw spacing.

Using the measurements inwards the photograph above, get together the leg organization according to the photograph below. Apply woods gum to the surfaces inwards contact earlier inserting the nails or screws.

I institute it helpful to partially hammer the nails inwards position through the legs earlier attaching the cross bar.

I also institute it helpful to attach the cross bar get-go (the i amongst nails),

and thence the side beam (the i amongst screws).

Step 4: Assemble the narrower legs
Gather the remaining pieces of lumber: 2 legs, the ix 3/4" cross bar too the 14" side beam amongst the 10.5" screw spacing. Assemble the narrower leg organization inwards the same agency equally the wider one, noting that the cross bar is straight off 4" (not 3") higher upwardly the pointed ends of the legs. This is to permit the 2 leg systems to nest inside each other when the stool is folded closed.

Step 5: Assemble the frame
Nest the narrow laid of legs inwards the wider, amongst the pointed ends inwards the right configuration for the stool to stand upwardly squarely on the ground.

On each side, delineate of piece of job upwardly the bolt holes too insert bolt, washers too nut inwards the next sequence: (from travel yesteryear to bottom): bolt, washer, wider leg, washer, narrower leg, washer, nut.

Secure tightly amongst the nut on the bottom.

This is the finished frame. Leave to dry out overnight, piece y'all travel on the stuff seat.

Part II: The Fabric Seat

Step 1: Cut
Cut out stuff equally follows:
  • Top fabric: i rectangle 19.5" x 14.5" (mine was Arrow)
  • Bottom fabric: i rectangle 19.5" x 14.5"(mine was navy twill)
  • Inner sail stabilizer: i rectangle 18.5" x 13.5" (mine was natural duckcloth/canvas)
Step 2: Pin too Sew
Assemble too pivot a stuff sandwich equally shown inwards the photograph below.
First, centralize too pivot the stabilizer to the WS of the travel yesteryear stuff thence that in that location is a uniform 1/2" border all around.
Next, pivot the bottom stuff to the travel yesteryear stuff thence that their RS are together too their edges are aligned.

Using a 1/2" seam allowance, run upwardly around the border of (but non on) the sail stabilizer, through both the travel yesteryear too bottom fabrics (red dashed line). Leave a large opening (about 10") along i of the long sides, for turning out.

Step 3: Topstitch
Clip the corners too plow the entire stuff sandwich RS out thence that the sail stabilizer is alone enclosed. Manipulate its corners inside the sandwich, if necessary, thence that it lies apartment too does non bunch up. Press all seams. Edge-stitch around (i.e. run upwardly almost 1/8" away from) the border of the sandwich to flatten the seam. Topstitch an additional delineate of piece of job almost 1/4"-1/2" from the edgestitching, to securely "catch" the layer of stabilizer betwixt the 2 outer fabrics.

The stuff topographic point is finished too laid for the frame. Note for non-sewers: if y'all had sized your frame accordingly, y'all could fifty-fifty skip the sewing altogether yesteryear using store-bought placemats!

With a heavy-duty staple gun, roll the shorter side of the stuff topographic point over the side beams of the frame too staple the stuff to the wood.

The finished stool, folded up

and laid for use!
